This 1973 Volkswagen Type 181 “Thing” was first registered in Oregon and has spent time in both California and Florida since the seller’s acquisition in September 1996. Equipment includes a removable white hardtop, a fold-down windshield, removable doors, an AM/FM radio, an EMPI carburetor, and an aftermarket exhaust system. The seller believes that the bodywork was refinished in its factory Sunshine Yellow (L11E) during prior ownership. A removable white hardtop is fitted, along with dual mirrors, removable doors, and black bumpers. Imperfections in the bodywork are visible, and a tie-down vinyl bikini top is included in the sale.
Steel 14″ wheels with a black finish wear VW-logo hubcaps and 185/70 Supermax TM-1 tires, the latter of which were reportedly installed in November 2019. A jack and spare steel wheel mounted with an older Bridgestone tire are located in the front trunk.
The front and rear seats are upholstered in gray patterned cloth and black vinyl, and equipment includes sun visors, lap belts, an AM/FM Roadmaster radio, and rubber floor mats.
The four-spoke steering wheel with an aftermarket wrap frames a 100-mph speedometer with an inset fuel gauge, the latter of which is said to read inaLurately by a quarter of a tank. The five-digit odometer shows under 18k miles.
The air-cooled 1.6L flat-four is equipped with an EMPI carburetor and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that service in 2019 included an oil change, a valve adjustment, and replacement of the fan belt, ignition components, and the fuel tank, fuel sending unit, and fuel hoses.
